Artist's Comments

...art should not be sold. And by no means everything that (anything of what?) is sold is art, anyway. I hold an idea of what is art which includes words like "judgement of history" and "survival to the pass of time". That's why I never call my designs art (I call them works, doodles, pictures), and I don't think anyone should either.

The poster is a bit of a circular joke -- if it is not art, you have been lied (the title of this page says deviantART, after all) to. But if it is art, you should really not have bought it. Equally, if you agree on what the poster says, you should burn it down, and if you don't, then why did you buy it in the first place?

I'll let it as an exercise for the reader.

This poster is based in the original idea (redone, though) that I had for the design "Burn This", which was submitted to the DeviantART clothing contest. Since (for obvious reasons) it didn't won any prize, I decided to make it avaliable through the deviantPRINTS as a poster (too bad that they don't print in T-shirts too).

When I submitted the original designs for the clothing contest, I promised that I would make the sources avaliable. To this day, I had procastinated it, but no longer for this one. You can download the SVG source here, and you can use it (and the above image) freely under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike license, which essentially lets you modify, use and redistribute as you see fit, provided that you give credit to the original author and any redistribution or derivation is kept unde this same license.

I agree, but who can define what art is anymore? It seems everyone is calling everything art nowadays.
Is it something that is only something that can be drawn, painted, sung, filmed, or played?
Does it only exist in the concept that it is an expression that makes you feel something?
o_O Boggles my mind, but that's not too hard, lol.
Anyhoo, you could print your own t-shirts through a little company called custominks [link] you have to buy in bulk, but it's no more expensive than buying blank shirts, your concepts are pretty crush so I'd imagine that if you could sell 'em easily through e-bay.

Hey, thanks a lot for the link -- I'll explore it, because I'm very much interested into printing tees.

Well, last time I debated "what is art, anwyay?" with a friend, we gave up at four in the morning because we couldn't agree if hummanity arises solely because o language, or because of the accurate coincidence of language and the ability to manipulate tools. :P

I hold mainly two definitions for this work. The first one, "Art", has to do with history -- Art is something that is judged in time, when seen backwards, as being significant for a moment in time. Art does not equate technique, and thus someone doing realist painting nowadays can be very skilled (and praiseable for that) but does not create art, because he is not contributing to the evolution of Art (now understood as a whole). Thus, Art is innovative, rupturist, and significative. And it has the quality to withstand the pass of time.

The other definition of "art" speaks, more accurately, about the creative process. "To create art" is to give birth to something, to innovate, to generate a reality from naught. The artist is a creator. In that sense, he (or she) is a God of sorts, for he is moulding the universe. Artistic creation rises the human being to a divine state, and marks definitely a difference between human and animal -- humans don't mould to their surroundings, but rather well, mould their surroundings to their need. Equally, they don't just look at what is around them -- they create and build upon it (mind you, this "creation" can very well be just a way of looking at what is already there -- think on photojournalism). Also, keep in mind that with this definition, "art" is strictly the act of creation -- the result of it (the sculpture, the photography, the painting, the book) is nothing but a dead corpse -- attractive, beautiful or not, but not "art" in this sense (perhaps "Art" in the former one).

Ahem. Now you know why it took us until 4 am. :P
